  • Dr. Jamie Barden “Impact of Esthetics on Daily Life"

Aesthetic enhancement is a goal for most treatments.  Yet practitioners see aesthetics differently from patients, not to mention their parents and potential employers.

Scientific evidence generally supports the positive impact of enhanced aesthetics, but an unobstructed view uncovers wide gaps in the evidence.

Psychology offers frameworks to understand aesthetics, including the "beauty is good" stereotype, and distinguishing attractiveness from warmth and competence.

Our recent randomized trials establish that visible malocclusion causes patients to appear incompetent, with real-world consequences for salary offers which quickly cover the cost of treatment.  This shows there is more to aesthetics than attractiveness.

The role of competence opens the door to more career aspiring patients and suggests wider conversations on the benefits of treatment.

    Course Objectives:

    • Understand different perspectives on aesthetics for orthodontists, patients, and outside decision-makers.

    • Learn psychology frameworks that predict of psychosocial factors and outcomes of aesthetic enhancement.

    • Discover how enhanced aesthetics cause patients to appear more competent, improving employment outcomes.

    • Expand the pool of patients by broadening conversations to include competence and career benefits.

  • Dr. Maren Shaw “BotulinumToxin Do's and Don'ts"

Dr. Shaw will bring her pearls of wisdom from dermatology to review the FDA approved indication/ contraindication for cosmetic injection of Botulinum Toxin.  She will discuss the various available preparations. She will review best practices when administering botulinum toxin.  She will also discuss the possible integration of botulinum toxin in an orthodontic practice.

    Course Objectives:

    • Attendees shall learn proper basic cosmetic botulium toxin preparation and injection techniques.
    • Attendees shall be able to identify basic, intermediate and advanced sites of injection and their associated potential complications.
  • Dr. Janice Lee (Part 1) “Orthognathic Surgery, Profile Analyses and Esthetics"

This lecture will include two parts. In the first part, Dr. Lee will describe Orthognathic surgery is a powerful tool for correcting dentofacial deformities and improving oral function. This talk will delve into the intricacies of profile analysis and how to leverage orthognathic surgery to achieve harmonious, aesthetically pleasing results

    Course Objectives:

      • Attendees will be informed about a detailed-driven clinical assessment of facial esthetics in orthognathic surgery cases
  • Dr. Nadine Almpani (Part 2) “Prediction of Facial Growth and 3D Analysis of Rare Craniofacial Diseases"

This lecture will include two parts. The second part will be a presentation of a novel methodology for the prediction of dentoskeletal malocclusion phenotype from an early age, which is particularly important for the optimization of treatment planning decisions in Class III cases. Finally, the application of morphometric analysis in the case of rare craniofacial deformity disease cohorts will also be presented.

    Course Objectives:

    • The participants will also learn about a new methodology that allows accurate diagnosis of dentoskeletal malocclusion from an early age
    • Finally, they will learn about the application of statistical morphometric analysis in the assessment of rare craniofacial deformity disease cohorts, and what we can learn from the study of aberrant craniofacial development about normal development.
  • Dr. Kelly Bolden “Procedures to Enhance or Compliment Orthodontic Treatment"
